Ronald B. Ventura

d. June 2, 2020

Obituary of Ronald B. Ventura Ronald Bruce Ventura, 71, Fulton, NY. Ronald, born July 18, 1948 and raised on Fenton Street in Syracuse, NY, died peacefully at home after a long battle with cancer. Ron was known by many names: “Son”, “Dad”, “Grandpa”, “Ronnie” and “Grandpa Ron”. He loved his grandchildren with his entire being, and loved spending time with them, especially teaching them his fishing skills. Ron was a proud father of Carrie (Andrew) Mangino, of Adams, NY and Justin Ventura (Sophie Banner), of Portland, OR. Ron married Nancy Davenport in 1994, and she took great care of him in their home in the woods until he passed. He is remembered by his grandchildren, whom he called his “treasures”, Sofia, Dominic, Francesca and Anthony as well as his stepsons, Lee, David (Wendy) and Nathan Davenport. They will miss him dearly. Ron enlisted in the United States NAVY during the Vietnam War in 1968. During his time in the NAVY, his navel ship, the USS Forrestal, caught fire and he was one of the few survivors in what was one of the worst Naval fires in history, alongside his shipmate, John McCain. He spent time in the U.S. Naval Reserves before beginning a 35-year career with the City of Syracuse Water Department. He retired from the City of Syracuse, and later moved to Fulton, to fully enjoy nature. Ron would always say that above all, his first and deepest true love was Mother Nature. Ron was an avid hunter and fisherman-spending much of his time either harvesting a deer, reeling in a fish or, if all else failed, catching a good buzz. He spent any moment he could outdoors with the Sprague Brothers at their cabin in the Alleghany Mountains. He also cherished his hot spots fishing on Oneida Lake. Ron treated his friends like family and enjoyed time spent with Corky, Chester, Gill, Johnny and Butch. Per Ron’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or formal services. Instead there will be a private memorial service at the hunting cabin at a future date and also a celebration of life at Brown Memorial UMC, in Syracuse, NY at a later date. Please consider making a donation in Ron’s memory to: Friends of Oswego County Hospice, P.O. Box 102, Oswego, NY, 13126, www.friendsofhospice.org.
