Obituary of Merlin C. Doty Merlin C. Doty, 86, of Volney passed away at Seneca Hill Manor after a long illness. Born in Fulton to the late Clifford and Marion Blake Doty, he was a lifelong resident of the area. Merlin started his working career with his father at the family business, Doty Oil Co., taking a short leave to proudly serve in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. After his service, he worked for Alltel, retiring after 25 years, and then took a job with Northern Companies and the Town of Volney. Merlin was a member of the Volney Volunteer Fire Dept., and had served as past vice president of the department. In his free time, Merlin enjoyed hunting, spending time at his camp at Panther Lake, watching NASCAR and caring for Doug, his granddaughter’s miniature horse. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Elaine. Merlin will be greatly missed by his children, Joe (Debra Van Patten) Doty and Karen (Dale) Dopp; grandchildren, Blake Joseph Doty, Camiel Teri Heagle and Britteny Dopp; sister, Marie (William) Lefancheck; nephew, Michael Lefancheck. A graveside service will be 11 am, Thursday, July 23 at Fairview (Bundyville) Cemetery, County Route 57, Volney, where social distancing requirements will be observed.
