Louise Welling Hyde

May 29, 1931 — October 18, 2024

Fulton resident, Louise Welling Hyde peacefully passed away to be with her lord and savior on October 18, with family by her side. Louise was born in May 1931, in Fulton, NY to Howard and Bernice Welling of Hannibal, NY. Louise was the wife of Douglas Hyde for 67 years.

Louise was raised on her parent’s farm and shadowed her dad and her grandfather, driving a tractor and tending to their chicken production and crops. She attended a one-room schoolhouse at Trolly Stop 48 in S.W. Fulton and graduated from Fulton High School. During her teen years she became proficient at playing the violin. Following high school, Louise attended the Crouse Irving School of Nursing, Syracuse, NY, beginning at age 17 and earning her Professional Registered Nurse license. She began her nursing career at Fulton Lee Memorial Hospital as a maternity nurse and attended the births of many of her sons’ schoolmates. While she left full-time work to raise her four sons, Louise continued as a nurse through private duty nursing. Later, Louise worked as an occupational nurse until retiring at age 78 following employments at Bird’s Eye, Nestlés, Anheuser Busch, Fitzpatrick Nuclear Power, and Crucible Special Products.

Louise was well known for being a loving, generous, and talented woman. She devoted 15 years serving as a Cub Scout leader for her sons and the many boys in the neighborhood. She served with Pack 764 of the Lanigan School and became a trainer of trainers for the Hiawatha Council. The Hiawatha Council awarded Louise the Scout District Award of Merit and Silver Fawn Award, the latter being the highest service honor awarded by the Boy Scouts of America. She was also a life member of the Lanigan School PTA. Louise loved to sing. She sang with the Pennellville Cortana, the Fulton First United Methodist Church choirs, and the Hamer Sing-a-Long Group. Louise was a very talented and creative craftsperson. Over the years she won blue ribbons and many other awards at the NY State Fair across her variety of masterful skills.

Louise is pre-deceased by her wonderful parents, Howard and Bernice Welling; husband, Douglas L. Hyde; sisters, Charlotte Folsom and Joyce Gehring; brother, Reverend Gary Welling, and a son, Brian Hyde. During her final years Louise was lovingly cared for by Brian’s wife, Ann.

Louise is survived by three sons, Lee (Doris) Hyde of Durham, NC, Kevin (Lisa) Hyde, of Missoula, MT, and Gregg (Susan) Hyde of Leesburg, VA; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
