James S. Blackburn, 91, of Fulton, NY took his last bridge walk on Friday 17 May. This time it was over the Rainbow Bridge. A 1949 graduate of Hannibal High School, Jim joined the Marines for the Korean War and was stationed in Japan. A crack shot and a crack pot, he was a favorite with his fellow leathernecks.
Following the service, he had a successful career in accounting with General Electric before turning to public service for Oswego County. He was County Auditor, Budget Officer and Analyst, and then in 1984 he was appointed Deputy Commissioner of Social Services.
Jim was industrious and had avocations as real estate broker and property manager. He also served as mayor of Hannibal. He attended University College of Syracuse University, SUNY at Oswego and Auburn Community College where he earned his Associate's degree.
An avid sportsman, his hobbies included flying as a private pilot, fishing and hunting. Jim was also an expert mechanic, having worked on jet engines for the Marines and owning and managing his own Texaco station franchise.
Jim is survived by two sons, James and Vance, two granddaughters, a brother and two sisters. He will be greatly missed.
There will be no services. Foster Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
