Obituary of Fred R. Lockwood February 25, 2014 Fred R. Lockwood, 89, peacefully passed into the Lord’s presence from St. Luke Health Services in Oswego, on February 25, 2014. Born on February 1, 1925 to Harold and Eva Lockwood, of Hannibal, NY, Fred graduated in the class of 1942. Drafted into the US Army in 1943, Fred landed on D-Day with the 4th Infantry on Utah Beach, earning two Bronze Stars and several other medals for heroic service in five major European campaigns, culminating with the Battle of the Bulge. Fred married Grace Wellwood on June 5, 1949 and resided in Southwest Oswego, where they raised 4 children and were happily married for 56 years, until Grace passed away in 2005. Fred purchased his own grocery store in Southwest Oswego (where Ontario Orchards is now) in 1949 and worked there for 11 years; worked 10 years in food service at SUNY Oswego; then worked for the county as the administrator of Michaud Nursing Home in Fulton until retiring. He enjoyed work and looked forward to each new day. Fred was active in Oswego Town government, serving as Clerk, Supervisor, and Assessor. He also served as a Trustee, then as President of the Fairdale Rural Cemetery, Hannibal. Fred is a member of Oswego Alliance Church where he has served the congregation through various ministries. Fred was active in sports since a boy, playing baseball on Hannibal’s team for many years, and then playing softball on Oswego teams. In later years he enjoyed taking part in the yearly Hannibal Old-Timer’s games, and umpiring softball games for Oswego leagues. While working at SUNY Oswego, Fred played and organized “pick-up” basketball games which became known as “Freddy-Ball,” after their organizer. Even at age 50, it was well known that Fred could out play the younger men! Surviving Fred are his children, Harold (Beth) Lockwood of Fulton, NY, Joyce (Chett) Hobbs of Florence, MS, Mary Ann (Gary) Wilcox of Mohawk, NY and Nancy (Jack) Hay of Knoxville, TN; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, with three more on the way; two sisters-in-law and a number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive those wishing to express their respects from 4-7 p.m. Friday, February 28 at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay Street, Fulton. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1 at the Oswego Alliance Church, 371 Thompson Road, Oswego with Pastor Wade Smith officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the spring at Fairdale Rural Cemetery, Hannibal. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Oswego Alliance Church, 371 Thompson Rd, Oswego, 13126 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 441 West Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, 13204.
